Live Like You Believe

Goodbye Comfy Mazda ;(
Saying goodbye is hard, but there are things you have to let go!
Hello BIG "Neal Mobile"
We recently "upsized" to a this 12 passenger van that we can actually all fit in our vehicle with seatbelts & with plenty of room to spare.  I didn't realize how much I'd miss my little Mazda.  And although the new van gets less mpg... we're probably actually saving on gas money, because I tend to procrastinate making trips/errands in the big beast until Jared gets home so I can use the little car.  It will be great for vacationing and I love having a CD player that works again!  The other day when  I buckled up the little kids to go on my first outing in the Neal Mobile I was feeling a bit depressed & negative about life, but the EFY CD that I got for Christmas was playing and the following words from "Live Like You Believe"  really inspired me.
"Wherever you are on the journey,
Live like you believe, live like you know, it's one sure way your faith will grow.
Listen to your heart, search in your soul and you'll find the strength that you need, his light, the gift of his peace when you live like you believe."
I reflected on the many blessings I have----a faithful husband, healthy, beautiful children, a nice warm home, freedom, no debt (except for the house), good friends, etc...way too many to list!---

It's easy for me to get bogged down in the unimportant things in life like dirty laundry, malfunctioning dishwashers, green slime in the emergency water,  unfinished homework, unflushed toilets, overcooked meals, driving on snowy roads, crazy mornings,  less than perfect piano lessons,  runny noses, spills, fhe lessons that don't measure up to my ideals.  I love the statement "Live like you Believe" and the different ways you can interpret it.  It fills me with hope and inspires me to live as if I believe things can be better, even if they aren't right now.  I also take it as a challenge to live (happily), because I believe.  I believe in repentance, I believe the Savior can lift my burdens, I believe the Spirit can inspire me how to teach my children, I believe that even in miserable surroundings I can be happy because I know the Lord loves me and this life is supposed to be a test to prepare me for greater blessings than I could ever imagine.  And I want to live like I remember what I believe, so others can see that happiness and peace that the gospel brings to my life.

It reminds me of some of my other favorite quotes which are from President Monson's past general conference addresses.
"Learn from the Past, Prepare for the Future, Live in the Present" (from In Search of Treasure)
"The Future is as Bright As Our Faith" (From Be of Good Cheer)

Which reminds me...  I have a Relief Society planning mtg tonight & am supposed to come with ideas for vinyl lettering inspirational craft ideas.  If you have any favorite inspiring wall quotes leave a comment.  The more ideas the merrier :)

More Remembering...

Visiting Teaching/Missionary Work
As a missionary I had the privilege of working with many less active sisters & renewed my own commitment to be a lifelong committed visiting teacher.  Lately one of the highlights of my week lately has been having the missionaries in our home each week to teach the discussions to my neighbor and her daughter who will be baptized in a few weeks.  It has been such a blessing to review the basic principles of the gospel, to see her renewed excitement for the gospel and be inspired by her determination to improve and be positive despite challenges in her life. We've been exchanging treats for years, but our friendship really sparked after I followed a very strong prompting on one visit to be BOLD and invite her to come to church with me that Sunday.

Tithing
My parents were always great examples to me of obeying the law of tithing.  It is a principle of the gospel that I have never really questioned.  I remember that even during times of financial strain my parents were always faithful tithe-payers.  During one particular time, there was not enough money for the house payment, but my mom of course paid the tithing and offered a prayer.  Not many days later, they received a check in the mail for a substantial sum from my dad’s cousin George Brimhall, who was living in California and wasn’t really that close to my dad.  My mom considered this a direct answer to her prayers and a result of obeying the law of the tithe.

Generosity
One of the most memorable Christmas’s for me growing up was the year when our family was financially struggling and someone left a huge box on our doorstep around Christmas Eve.  Someone had thoughtfully picked out gifts for each of the kids.  I remember getting a calligraphy set that I have to this day.  My brother Jon received baseball cards, which he collected at the time.  I felt grateful to this unknown giver and committed as a teenager that I wanted to do the same for someone else when I could.

Scripture Study

I don’t clearly recall when I started reading the scriptures on a daily basis, although I always knew this was an important habit for my mom each morning when I was growing up.  By the time I was 13 I had established this habit as well.  I clearly recall one night when I was completing my daily scripture study in the Book of Mormon, I knelt down on my blue carpet beside my bed to say my nightly prayers.  I felt an extreme outpouring of peace and love and knew that Heavenly Father knew me personally and I knew that the Book of Mormon was true.  I’ve had many confirming experiences since then as I have received tidbits of revelation and peace while reading the scriptures, but I consider this as one the important beginning moments of  gaining my own personal testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel and Heavenly Father’s plan for us on earth.

Temple Marriage
One of the most memorable Young Women Activities for me was visiting the Salt Lake Temple Grounds and then opening a letter on the lawn of the temple grounds.  The letter included my mom’s testimony of the importance of temple marriage and the blessings it had brought into her life.   Back then it was fun to dream about what my future “someone” would be like. I always planned on being married in the temple, but I don’t think I fully appreciated the blessing of growing up in a home where my parents were happily married in the temple until I left home and became friends with many people who didn’t experience this privilege.  I think that marrying my eternal companion Jared in the temple is the most important choice I have ever made. Enjoying his companionship on this earth is one of the most sublime things ever and I’m grateful I get to keep on creating memories together with him through eternity.

Honesty
My dad is one of the most honest people that I know.  I grew up seeing his example of integrity and I was honest in most cases as well. I think seeing the example of my parent’s helped me to have a desire to have integrity as well.  It’s actually the instances of dishonesty that stand out as the most poignant moment in my youth of learning the lessons of honesty the hard way.  In my 8th grade French class we were required to read aloud some excerpts in French each week to our parents and then have them sign a paper saying we did.  I was a very diligent student and took my homework (too) seriously.  My mom asked me to just read the excerpts to myself and she would sign the paper for me – since reading French to her didn’t really help either of us.  For one assignment I had read the words aloud to myself, but realized when I got to class that I had forgotten to have my mom sign my paper.  I spotted a previous assignment with her signature in my folder so I just changed the date on it and handed it in.  That night I was tormented with feelings of guilt for being dishonest with my teacher so the next day I mustered up the courage talk to her and confess.  I felt like I was going to cry (which didn’t happen for me much as a child), fortunately she smiled – thanked me for being honest and gave me the credit for the assignment anyway.

Another unforgettable moment when my own dishonesty “haunted” me was an experience I has while on vacation to at my Grandma Knight’s house one year.  She had an amazingly tall swingset in her backyard that had a couple of swings and a fun glider on it.  One summer I played in the backyard with one of the neighborhood girls.  While on her glider we carelessly grabbed handfuls of flowers that were growing beside it as we swung high into the air.  It wasn’t until a few hours later that it occurred to me that I probably shouldn’t have picked all of those flowers and the guilt started to set in.  I was always a little scared of “old” people and I didn’t dare mention it to my grandma.  The next day we headed to some other relative’s house and I had missed my chance to confess.  My “sin” weighed on me for the entire vacation and I didn’t mention it to anyone until several months later.  My sister Kara insisted that her and Grandma had gone out the next day to pick those “weeds” – the same flowers I had been grabbing at the day before.  I thought she was trying to make me feel better.

Family History

Although I haven’t yet done much as far as typical family history research, I feel a closeness to my ancestors who have gone before me and paved the way for my own happiness in the gospel.  I love to read about their lives and hope to emulate many of the good qualities they possess.  I feel an especially close tie to my ancestors whom I was named after – Dessie Kristine Swalberg and Kristina Jonsson.  I’m grateful that my parents chose to pass on a part of my legacy to me in my name and hope that my children will have their hearts turned to their fathers as well through the names we have passed on to them.  During my challenging pregnancy with Alyssa I was feeling so nauseous and my mind started flooding with depressing thoughts.  It was hard for me to just sit in bed and not get up and clean up my messy house.  But then I started reflecting on my grandmother Dessie’s life and the many physical challenges she dealt with throughout her life without complaint and I felt buoyed up by her example.  I also feel immense gratitude to Kristina for leaving her home and family in Sweden to come to unfamiliar surroundings so that she could join the Saints in Utah and receive temple blessings for herself and her ancestors.

Motherhood

When I think of motherhood, I think of the saying that my mom had cross-stitched on the wall in our home growing up
“Cleaning and scrubbing can wait ‘til tomorrow
For babies grow up we’ve learned to our sorrow,
So quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.”
As a child I had no idea how many sacrifices my mom made to take the time to nurture and teach us instead of pursuing her own interests.  But I knew that being a mom was a top priority for her and am so grateful that she chose to be a mom instead of a career woman so she could be there “at the crossroads” for me. I love the saying “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world” and I am thankful for the choice opportunity I have to be the mother of my children.

Remembering...

It feels like I bounce back & forth to various things I feel passionately about... piano, educating my children, family history.  Lately I've been immersed in emergency preparedness - restocking our food storage, rotating water, actually cooking more w/ all of the wheat and powdered milk I  have stored, updating our 72 hr kits, deciding on the best emergency heat/fuel sources, etc.  All of this emergency prep is even creeping its way into my dreams.  I dreamed I ran out of water and I woke up feeling so thirsty!  Realistically in a fire or sudden emergency, I wouldn't have time to gather all of the journals, pictures, family history, etc., so I want to make a greater effort to store some of it online or at other locations.  Although I love teaching my children to play the piano, to read and to have a love for learning, more than anything I want them to know of my testimony and gain spiritual strength of their own.  So a few years ago I started writing some of my own "Spiritual Remembrances" to pass on to them.  If we ever are in a real emergency... these are the principles I want them to remember.

Fasting & Prayer
When I was about 13 years old, my dad was diagnosed with a rare disease called polymyositis (many muscle weakness).  His own body had begun to attack his muscles and he was losing strength and muscle mass despite his consistent exercise.  He was very weak and I remember having to help push him up the stairs because his legs were so weak.  He had lost his job and things were financially tight.  He worked several odd jobs and was working a sales commission job that required him to work Saturdays.  He had to meet a certain quota of sales or he would be let go.  I remember my mom gathering us all together in the family room of our West Jordan home while my dad was at work and offering a family prayer on his behalf and encouraging us to fast for him.  Then we all went to our rooms to offer personal prayers.  I went to my bedroom closet, shut the door, read a few scriptures and then offered a heartfelt prayer for my dad.  I remember feeling the overwhelming love of my Father in Heaven and the reassuring peace that everything would be okay.  I felt so close to the Lord at that time.  That day my dad made a huge sale that enabled him to keep that job for a while longer.  Ironically he later lost that job, but the memories of the love that Heavenly Father has for me is still embedded in my mind.

Wrestling Season

The boys are thick into wrestling season again.  Our friend sent us this video of Daniel's match.  Jacob was paired up with 2 boys who were significantly heavier than him (He weighs 79 lbs, his heaviest opponent was 100 lbs!) and he still won both matches.  I guess all of that early morning practice is paying off.

Pinewood Derby

Jacob & Daniel were pretty excited about designing their cars for the pinewood derby.  The "Y" duct tape came in handy to add an easy BYU logo to Jacob's car.  Daniel designed his to look like a Cougars football field. Despite their extensive axel prep, they didn't fare to well as far as speed, but Daniel was awarded Coolest Design & Jacob had the best paint job.

Kids

I just love looking at the random pictures of my kids and their cute antics.

Making scary faces for grandpa

Delight in the simple things (my niece)

Ever curious

Okay... maybe a little too curious :)

Silly smirks

A bandaid and a kiss fixes everything.  Two are even better.  Injuries came from curiosity mixed with a razor :(

Love my little winker... I have a pic of her winking around 8 mos old too!

I can do it myself - added the finishing touches on her hair.

Want to be big NOW!

Love horsing around

Y our Christmas was Memorable

This year my brothers Matt and Aaron came up to join us for Christmas, which was pretty brave of them considering the flu bug started flying at our house on the 23rd and was in full force on Christmas Eve by the time they arrived.  We loved having them up to visit and had a great time playing games, reenacting the nativity, watching movies and sledding in the backyard.  And I loved not having to pack anything to travel:)

We exchanged a lot of homemade gifts this year.
Becca sewed some BYU pjs for the boys.

I made a Y blanket for Daniel... and Emily gave both boys BYU notebooks decorated w/ Y duct tape.

I passed on one of my favorite childhood toys to Emily - the Strawberry Shortcake berry Bake shop.

We had fun decorating a welcome banner for Matt & Aaron, including secret messages with invisible ink.

Alyssa was pretty excited to try on some of Emily's jewelry from my bros.

The boys let everyone try out their new sleds in the backyard.

And I got the biggest kiss ever.................. from Jacob!  He was pretty excited to see me open this one.  The only thing he was more excited about was his gift of one month of netflix to Rebecca.
